Are Most Gold Coins 28g or Troy Ounce (31.1g)?

I've been looking at Apmex's gold coins and I was wondering if most older (and especially newer) gold coins are the usual 28g=1 ounce or the troy ounce 31.1g=1 troy ounce? Thanks!

Troy ounce is the standard. One ounce American Eagles weigh more than 31.1g because copper and silver are alloyed in with the 31.1g of gold for hardness.

All precious metal products (bullion) are measured by the troy standard, 31.1033 grams to the troy ounce, 12 troy ounces to the troy pound. But watch those snipers on eBay, some make up their own standards as they go.

FWIW - here's a good calculator if you know the 'pure gold' content of a coin.

http://dendritics.com/scales/metal-calc.asp

For example a $5 eagle (1/10th ounce) is worth about $63.26 spot (at the time of this post).

Be very careful of shipping & insurance charges on eBay.......and make sure they have a 99.9% to a 100% rating with at least 100+ feedbacks.

Also, for foreign coins - weights & measures go here:

And select the letter by 'country'.........NEVER assume the listed gold content on a Fleabay add is valid - always re-check the numbers.
